What are crowns?

Crowns or caps are laboratory made restorations which cover the whole tooth. A dental crown may be needed if tooth is badly broken down, i.e. if it has a large or worn out filling, or has a large amount of decay.

What kind of crowns do you offer?

With old technology, dental crowns were made with a metal foundation; although strong, they often appeared dull and lifeless and it was common to have the metal showing as grey or black around the gum line. Today we are able to offer metal free crowns; made completely from porcelain or ceramic, these crowns are beautiful, natural looking and a great choice for front teeth. New bonding technology allows the crown to be bonded directly to your tooth so that they become one unit, almost like an enamel replacement. For back teeth where strength is the priority the most popular choices are all metal, such as gold crowns, or porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns which offer excellent strength but with a natural, tooth coloured finish.

What are veneers?

A veneer refers to a thin layer of tooth coloured material which fits over the front surface of your tooth. Veneers are commonly used to improve the appearance of teeth and can change the colour, shape and even position of your teeth. Porcelain veneers are individually made in the laboratory where our skilled technicians will hand-finish each one to ensure a natural match to the neighbouring teeth.

What are the alternatives?

The process of having veneers fitted involves gently shaving the front surface enamel from the tooth. The delicate porcelain veneer is then bonded to the prepared tooth. This can be a fantastic treatment option for many people looking to improve the appearance of stained, crooked or misaligned teeth.

How are veneers fitted?

At Cambria Dental Practice we also offer composite veneers, also known as composite bonding, which are a less invasive treatment option than traditional porcelain veneers. Composite veneers require virtually no tooth preparation and the veneer is created from tooth coloured composite material. Composite veneers are used to create beautiful natural looking teeth and are particularly good for closing gaps and changing the shape of teeth.
